Cake Wallet Mid-Year Update: Progress Made, Lightning Ahead

Looking Back: Promises Kept

When we published our 2025 roadmap in January, we knew this would be an ambitious year for Cake Wallet. Six months in, we've not only delivered on major commitments, but exceeded them!

Privacy Infrastructure: Built and Delivered

Native Tor Integration arrived as promised, giving Android users experimental access to better network-level privacy. Support for other platforms is coming soon, and we're thrilled with the community response so far!

Enhanced Bitcoin Privacy expanded with our brand new Payjoin v2 implementation. Building on our Silent Payments integration, Payjoin v2 allows users to collaborate with merchants and other users to create transactions that are virtually indistinguishable from regular Bitcoin payments, breaking common blockchain analysis techniques. This positions Cake Wallet as the only mobile wallet offering both Silent Payments and Payjoin v2 privacy protection.

Background Sync on Android might seem like a technical detail, but this feature single-handedly fixes the largest usability complaint with Monero, Litecoin MWEB, and Bitcoin Silent Payments. No more long sync times, just open Cake Wallet to all of your wallets fully synced, like magic!

Expanding the Ecosystem

We launched three major additions to our assets in Cake Wallet:

  • Zano brought cutting-edge privacy tech and tools.
  • Decred added a privacy and governance-focused cryptocurrency.
  • dEURO introduced users to decentralized Euro yield opportunities through this Ethereum-based stablecoin, earning 10% APR directly within Cake Wallet.

A Fresh Identity

Perhaps most visibly, our rebrand marked Cake Wallet's evolution to a comprehensive cryptocurrency platform. Our new logo, visual identity, and messaging better reflect both our technical sophistication and commitment to user-friendly design. Specifically:

  • New Cake Wallet themes, which we'll be expanding shortly to include accent colors (Yes, Monero orange!) as well as an AMOLED theme.
  • New Cake Wallet logo, designs, and website.
  • New Cake Pay logo, designs, and website.
  • We'll have updates coming soon to Cupcake, Monero.com, and more!

Leading At Major Events

Of course we can't ignore all the amazing opportunities to participate in events all over the world, from Bitcoin & Litecoin Vegas, to Monerokon & Bitcoin Prague. The reception was fantastic! Users consistently praised our interface, privacy features, and commitment to self-custody principles. Many attendees were surprised to discover features like Silent Payments and Tor integration working seamlessly in a mobile wallet, with several long-time Bitcoin users switching to Cake Wallet on the spot. Thank you everyone for saying hi to us and making all the hard work worth it.

The Second Half: Building the Future of Self-Custody

The second half of 2025 brings major features that will significantly improve your Cake Wallet experience.

Bitcoin Lightning: Instant Payments, Privacy Preserved

Our most anticipated feature is approaching: Bitcoin Lightning integration. Lightning enables everything from micropayments to large transfers with near-instant settlement. Unlike most implementations, we're developing Lightning with our privacy-first, self-custodial philosophy intact to ensure users maintain control over their transaction privacy.

Cake Wallet Desktop Revamp

Our Desktop Wallet Revamp will feature:

  • Hardware Wallet Integration: Support for various hardware wallets.
  • Intuitive Coin Management: Easy tagging and organization of your coins, with bulk selection tools and privacy-focused spending controls that make advanced coin control accessible to all users
  • Rebuilt Interface: Optimized and designed for desktop usage.

This isn't just a mobile app ported to desktop, it's a ground-up rethinking of what desktop cryptocurrency software should be.

Additional Second-Half Features

Beyond our major initiatives, we're also delivering several highly-requested features:

  • Cupcake's upcoming public release is being redesigned as a simplified, beautiful introduction to crypto for newcomers—allowing anyone to repurpose an old phone to become a highly secure signing device. No need to pay for a hardware wallet, and no need to hand over personal information for extra security.
  • Cupcake's Bitcoin and Litecoin support will provide more options for secure cryptocurrency usage.
  • New Hardware Wallets: Support for Ledger, Trezor, Foundation, BitBox, and Coldcard devices
  • Dogecoin Integration: Popular demand has made this a priority for mainstream adoption.
  • Continuous UI/UX Enhancements: Ongoing refinements based on user feedback and usability testing.

Looking Forward: Comprehensive Privacy & Sovereignty Tools

As we approach 2025's second half, Cake Wallet continues expanding as a comprehensive privacy-focused cryptocurrency platform, integrating advanced wallet functionality with practical spending solutions (Cake Pay), yield opportunities (dEURO), and cutting-edge privacy technology (Tor, Silent Payments, Payjoin v2).

Our progress this year demonstrates that privacy, security, and usability aren't competing priorities. The features coming in the next six months will cement Cake Wallet's position as the platform for users who refuse to choose between sophisticated functionality and approachable design.
