Lightning is (finally) here
With today’s launch of Lightning, we’ll walk through the features that make Cake Wallet’s Lightning integration stand out from the pack.
Lightning has always promised fast, low-cost Bitcoin payments, but for most people that promise came with a catch. Using Lightning meant navigating channels, liquidity, and uptime, or quietly handing custody to someone else in exchange for a smoother experience. For years, that tradeoff kept Lightning out of Cake Wallet, as we weren’t willing to add it unless we could do so in a way that preserved user control and privacy, but was also intuitive and easy to use.
With Spark — a next-generation Bitcoin layer two network that pairs seamlessly with Lightning — and the Breez SDK, that finally changed. Together, they make it possible to offer Lightning that feels instant and intuitive without turning bitcoin into an IOU or pushing complexity onto the user. Payments work without channel management, users don’t need to stay online all the time or rely on centralized push notifications, and funds remain fully non-custodial with an on-chain exit always available. Lightning becomes something you can simply use, rather than something you have to manage.

With today’s launch of Lightning, we’ll walk through the features that make Cake Wallet’s Lightning integration stand out from the pack. From privacy-first defaults to a broad ecosystem of Lightning-centric tools, each piece was built to make Lightning practical for everyday payments without compromising the principles that matter.
How Does Cake’s Lightning Integration Stand Apart?
(Self-custodial) Lightning, made easy
While many Lightning wallets have come and gone, users have ultimately had two core choices over the years — do you want to keep self-custody over your Bitcoin but have to constantly babysit channels, plan ahead for liquidity requirements, and be sure you keep your phone or server always-online, or do you want to offload that responsibility to someone else and give up custody entirely? With Cake Wallet’s integration of Lightning, you truly can have your cake and eat it too. Getting started with Lightning is as easy as hitting receive and having a friend send you a few sats, without any need to wait for an on-chain transaction to open a channel or worrying about if you properly balanced your inbound and outbound liquidity. Payments are still near-instant, but without you having to think about what’s happening behind the scenes every time you want to simply use Bitcoin.
No more need to give up self custody to get an incredible user experience — the future of Lightning is finally here.
Privacy-First Defaults
Privacy is not an optional setting in Cake Wallet’s Lightning implementation. Unlike other Lightning wallets using Spark, Cake Wallet makes it easy to receive over Lightning without revealing your Spark address, a Spark-native address only used for transfers within the Spark network. Additionally, Cake prevents your Spark transactions from being published to Spark block explorers, meaning that your barista has no way to see your balance when you buy your latte each morning. Cake’s strong privacy defaults make it a more private user experience than many other Spark-based Lightning wallet implementations available today. The privacy model is closer to a VPN than a public ledger: activity is offloaded from Bitcoin’s permanent transparency without pretending to be a full privacy layer. Users don’t need to configure anything or “remember” to protect themselves. Cake makes privacy easy with Lightning.
We’ll continue pushing the limits of what’s possible when it comes to privacy in Spark, with plans for hidden amounts for Spark transfers and more on the roadmap.
Custom Lightning Addresses

Lightning addresses are a human-readable way to receive Lightning payments, designed to work more like an email address than a long string of numbers and characters. Instead of sharing invoices or complicated payment details every time, users can simply give someone a recognizable address, and payments can be routed automatically. This makes Lightning feel far more natural and practical for everyday use, whether for business, tips, or peer-to-peer payments. Under the hood, Lightning addresses translate into payment requests behind the scenes, but from the user’s perspective, the experience is simple, consistent, and easy to remember.
In Cake Wallet, Lightning addresses are available from the very beginning. Users can create a custom Lightning address right away, without needing to meet minimum balances, usage thresholds, or other hidden requirements that many platforms impose. Cake makes it possible to offer a smooth onboarding experience where people can start receiving payments immediately, without giving up custody or waiting to “unlock” basic features. The result is Lightning that feels accessible from day one.

All your Bitcoin wallets in one app

For most Bitcoiners, there has always been a need for multiple apps to be able to manage your Bitcoin across your long-term “cold” storage, your short-term “hot” wallet, and your daily Lightning wallet. This used to require three separate apps to get the most out of your setup, requiring keeping up with updates, readjusting to different UX flows each time you switched apps, etc. With Cake Wallet, we’re bringing Lightning into the fold to pair with our best-in-class on-chain wallet, where you can easily manage your funds, use advanced privacy tools like Silent Payments and Payjoin, and much more.
But it doesn’t stop there! Cake’s support for almost every hardware wallet out there ensures that you can easily pair your favorite hardware wallet with Cake Wallet, making those Lightning top-ups from cold storage easier than ever — no need to even copy and paste addresses, just pick the right wallet from your contacts when you go to send and you’re off to the races.
One app to rule them all across the entire spectrum of self-custody.
Instant Lightning <> crypto swaps

While many in the Bitcoin space talk about the concept of being “Bitcoin-only”, the reality is that the majority of Bitcoiners are using Bitcoin as a vital tool for freedom alongside other, less cypherpunk cryptocurrencies. The combination of Bitcoin and stablecoins, specifically, is providing a powerful dual-lifeline for much of the Global South, allowing them to save hard-earned wages in Bitcoin and spend Tether (USDT) at merchants or send it back home to family members as an immensely useful form of remittances. Cake Wallet has always provided a fantastic fit for these users, but Lightning makes this better than ever before. Making a swap from Lightning to USDT takes mere seconds now thanks to the Lightning Network’s speed, letting you go from Bitcoin balance to USDT in your Ethereum or Tron wallet in less than a minute.
Lower fees, faster swaps, and faster payments only continues to increase Bitcoin’s impact to those who desperately need a decentralized and censorship-resistant way to move value, and will continue to shift more and more users to using it as a method of exchange.
Spend Bitcoin with your favorite real-world brands
While users have been loving Lightning support on Cake Pay, our privacy-first debit card and gift card service, it’s required a bit of juggling to use in a browser alongside another Lightning wallet. Today, that ends. Every Cake Wallet user has Cake Pay access just a tap away in the new Apps button on the bottom bar, with native Lightning payments that make using your Bitcoin in real life faster than ever before. Pick a pre-paid debit card that you can use anywhere online, or jump into a gift card for one of thousands of brands to make your Bitcoin useful to you today.
Soon, we’ll also support complete in-app delivery, allowing you to pay instantly with Lightning and get your gift card codes in milliseconds, directly in your Cake Wallet app, making it perfect for paying exact amounts while you’re waiting in the checkout line.
